BAYA Corporation to Receive Support for Youth Mental Health Services through inaugural $20,000 grant

Louisville, KY— November 17, 2021 Today, Kosair Charities announced the inaugural grant of $20,000 to the Beautiful As You Are (BAYA) Corporation to continue to support and enhance youth mental health services for young girls, ages 6-18, and their families at no cost to them.

According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, only 30% of the African-American community receives mental health support, compared to the US average of 43%. BAYA began in 2014 to prevent suicide and other destructive behaviors by empowering girls to love themselves and find positive ways to cope with their current situations versus turning to negative behaviors. Incorporated as a nonprofit in 2017, BAYA began serving girls through self-esteem building and empowerment workshops through nine chapters in local schools and nonprofits, and opened the “BAYA Center” in Clarksville, IN in June 2020.

“I love BAYA because they’ve helped me deal with the effects of being bullied, and the death of my grandmother. We may not realize but at the end of the day we all have some type of trauma we internalize,” said Essence, a BAYA Girl. “When you are here, you’re in a space where you aren’t judged or looked down upon. In a world where love is so hard to find, I was able to feel loved and supported by the BAYA Corporation and everything it has to offer.”

Socioeconomic factors can make treatment options and services impossible for low-income families. Staff at the BAYA Center have seen firsthand how the COVID-19 pandemic has added stress and depression to the girls being served. A recent partnership with Dr. Twyna Bell, owner of the National Child Guidance Centers – Minority Families, in Louisville, KY will provide mental health services for all families enrolled at the BAYA Center at no out-of-pocket cost to them.

“There is no better investment we can make than in the children of our community and state,” said John Bergin, Vice Chair of Kosair Charities Board of Directors. “As a donor who lives in the Southern Indiana community it is an honor to be just a small part of the crucial BAYA mission and the direct impact they are making on the future of these children.”
