About Dr. W. Barnett Owen
Dr. W. Barnett Owen shared a vision for improving the lives of children throughout KY and Southern Indiana. A long-time children's health care advocate with a strong compassion for children in need and the first orthopedic specialist in Kentucky; he provided the momentum for building the Kosair Crippled Children Hospital.
As a member of Kosair Shrine Temple he presented a plan to his fellow Nobles to fund a free convalescent home for children. His initial idea grew, and as a result, the Kosair Crippled Children Hospital proudly accepted its first needy child on May 12, 1926. The 50-bed hospital was the first hospital in Kentucky exclusively for disabled children. In addition to Dr. Owen's efforts with Kosair Crippled Children's Hospital, he was a member of the Kentucky Society for Crippled Children and played a major role in the creation of the state-funded Kentucky Crippled Children Commission.
